PSHE

Intent

PSHE is a wide-reaching subject encompassing personal, social, health and economic education. At Leedon, this subject is a key part of providing pupils the foundations for a fulfilled and happy life, as well as improving the life chances of our young learners. At Leedon we pride ourselves on our commitment to pupils’ health and wellbeing. By teaching high quality PSHE we aim to give our children the knowledge and skills they will need to look after their physical and mental health, both now and in the future – we know that these are skills that have a lifelong impact. In a rapidly changing world, PSHE is also a vital tool for helping children to manage the risks associated with online activities and to understand how to be safe in this environment. We believe that high quality PSHE lessons can underpin children’s achievement in other curriculum areas – our intent is that it embeds learning for life.

As a maintained lower school, we must provide relationships education to all pupils under section 34 of the Children and Social Work Act 2017.

We are not required to provide sex education, but we do need to teach the elements of sex education contained in the science curriculum.

In teaching RSE, we must have regard to guidance issued by the secretary of state, as outlined in section 403 of the Education Act 1996.

We must also have regard to our legal duties set out in:

  • Sections 406 and 407 of the Education Act 1996
  • Part 6, chapter 1 of the Equality Act 2010
  • The Public Sector Equality Duty (as set out in section 149 of the Equality Act 2010). This duty requires public bodies to have due regard to the need to eliminate discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations between different people when carrying out their activities

Implementation

We teach a theme-based scheme, so that teaching and learning follow a logical progression and cover the key areas identified by the PSHE Association, the national body for the subject. This forms the structure of our curriculum, whilst also offering flexible framework that is adaptable to the particular needs of children at Leedon. This framework incorporates the PSHE curriculum areas that have recently become statutory in primary schools: Relationships Education and Health Education. Our curriculum is compliant with the government's statutory guidance for RSE and Health Education which can be accessed via the gov.uk link below.

These are the three overarching themes to our PSHE curriculum, and each comprises 3 strands:

Impact

The measure of our success in teaching PSHE is that children leave Leedon Lower School having developed the resilience and strength of character they will need to thrive in an ever-changing world. They will be considerate, thoughtful individuals who have a sense of their place in the wider community and who are able to develop good relationships with others. We want children at Leedon Lower School to become kind, caring adults who are able to take responsibility for their physical and emotional wellbeing, and to make well-informed choices. We strive to ensure that our children lead happy, healthy and fulfilling lives - not just while they are at Leedon, but throughout their lives,
